 Water Magick

In Celtic tradition water was sacred : it represented a liminal place, a portal to the Otherworld and Other Realms. It is well known that the Celts practiced forms of water-worship, water magick and craft, and different bodies of water (and sea) were used in consecration rituals, Otherworld journeys, communication with Gods and Spirits, in healing, cleansing, protection and much more.
In water magick, one exerts Their own will and intent through Their physical and energetic bodies to perform rituals and spells, incantations and charms that can change the properties of water.
This is why Water Magick can indeed be very powerful.
Moreover, if one accepts that words and intent influence the structure of water molecules, as was proven by research of Masaru Emoto, and defines magick as change according to will, and considers will and intent to be virtually synonimus, one can state a clear and simple formula for water magick :
intent + water + delivery method = magickal change
Water, as an element, can be worked with in all its various stages and states, but it can also be worked with as an entity – as a spirit or otherworldly being, and offer healing, communication and advice.

Sacred wells and springs were often seen as liminal places, as tresholds that provided entrance into the Otherworld where individuals could commune with beings who dwelled there. Sacred wells were considered to be places of healing, magick, transformation  and wisdom. Some of these were said to be guarded by the Fair Folk, Lake ladies, nymphs and spirits, and sometimes said to have spirits of their own. There are numerous accounts of faery women, lake ladies, well maidens, cup bearers and ladies in white appearing near these places. In the story of the Lady of the Fount, a faery woman used a silver bowl, the water from the fount, and a marble slab to perform weather magick.

Of healing stones and water magick

In Irish and closely related Celtic Cultures stones and crystals were used along with water,  for healing, divination, protection, achieving victory, heightened states , good luck…Many stones were mentioned as being luck and victory bringers and were used in charms, carried on the body and some were even ingested in form of powder to achieve desired state or healing benefits. Precious metals were often combined for creating magickal healing objects, as famous Balls of Rock Crystal (dating from Iron Age) which were wrapped in bands of silver. Although unknown exactly what they were used for, it is believed they held a magickal significance ; similar balls of crystal wrapped in silver were used in folklore for magickal and healing purposes. These stones would be ritually wrapped with silver bands, usually four, with a loop for hanging or wearing. Then crystal would be dipped into sacred or blessed water with a spoken charm. In this magickal process, Sacred Water more than often played major role for achieving magickal states, and to heal both humans and animals.

Sacred Vessels

" Sacred Vessel  is a magickal object, which carries deep symbolism and potent magick.
It is a symbol of creation, gestation, transformation, renewal – it holds magick."

In Celtic folklore, mythology and history-in literature we find numerous accounts of otherworldly beings, sacred women, both gods and goddesses,  who are associated with water. Many of them are depicted holding a vessel, gazing into water, bathing in water, wielding powers of sea and water or  being birthed from the sea. Sacred vessels held great importance in Celtic Mythology and folklore, some known to be mysterious magickal objects which would grant powers of vitality, healing, victory, magick, divination and keep or hold enchanted liquids. Magickal goblets, cups, cauldrons, phials and bottles are just some of those ancient mythological objects. In Celtic folklore and mythology, Lake Ladies, Well Maidens and Fairy women were sometimes described as owning magickal vessels, phials, cups and pitchers which contained otherworldly liquids imbued with magickal power.

Some of these vessels were borrowed or gifted to humans from denizens of the Ë™Otherworld, such as mythological, Manannan`s cup, and,  in Irish folklore, Biddy Early`s Sidhe bottle which was said to be a gift from the Hidden Folk, and was used by her to perform healing and magick, and store magickal liquids.

We find examples of Otherworldly vessels in Irish and Celtic Myths and legends, and one of these is menti
oned in a legend of
Vessel of Bad
urn :

" The sixth ordeal was the vessel of Badurn, who was a king in very ancient times. His wife went to the well, and at the well she saw two women out of the fairy mounds, and between them was a chain of bronze. When they saw the woman coming towards them they dove into the well. She dove after them straight into the well, up and into a Sí, and in that fairy-mound she saw a marvellous vessel of crystal.

If a man should utter three false words while holding it, it would crack into three parts in his hand. If a man should speak three true words while it was in his hand, it would join together again. King Badurn's wife begged that vessel from the folk of the fairy-mound and it was given to her..."
