Hornbeam spring is located at the foot of the steep cliffs in the shade of Hornbeam trees.
Almost at the very spring, Hornbeam Creek branches out into several streams, forming small loughs surrounded by the osier willow, few Lombardi poplars and old white willow trees..
At springtime,, on the steep cliffs around the spring you can see beautiful flowers : daffodils and snake`s head lillies, while violets, cyclamen and different ferns grow and bloom along the flow of creek.
A legend told by senior storytellers tells about beautiful, etheral, dancing "Vile" ( Fairy maidens) ,
gathering around the spring on full moon nights and luring mortal men, so they can have their way with them.
Sacred Springs and Wells in mythology :
In Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Slavic myth, wells and springs are depicted as originating in the Otherworld - that parallel dimension whose inhabitants have the power to control the natural forces of this world. From sources in the Otherworld, water flows into our world to fill springs or gush forth as rivers. These bodies of water and others are closely identified with goddesses , who are thought to be part of the water's flow. Such sacred water sources are also often linked to the fruit of certain trees, like hazelnuts, rowan berries, apples etc.
It was believed that drinking from these holy waters or bathing in them would bestow the power of the Otherworld in the form of poetic inspiration, wisdom, or healing. Supernatural fish, especially salmon or trout, are still said to appear in a well's depths to those seeking omens for the future. The fish motif may derive from a belief that well goddesses could take the form of a fish. Also, supernatural fish, like salmon, were often credited with being bearers of "imbas" - the "light that illuminates" - meaning the insight and wisdom that comes from a supernatural encounter, rather than the knowledge acquired through conventional study.
In pagan times, the wells were visited at special times of the year, such as fire, lunar and festivals, equinoxes and solstices. These were all special turning-points of the Celtic year when the gates of the Otherworld were opened. This is especially true for Samhain, where the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest point, and often visions of the Daoine Sidhe were seen in sacred places.
For this collection, I chose gemstones which were magically used for summoning Water spirits, travelling to Otherworld, connecting with other planes and energies.
They reflect beauty and magic of Water.
